That’s a lot of chemistry to mix and keep. In my reading on separate bleach and fixer, I had come across methodologies to use entirely Kodak Flexicolor chemistry, but the thing that held me back was you had to mix 5L of the developer at a time. Further, not using the blix meant that I was stockpiling blix chemistry packets. This proved to not be terribly sustainable as I found myself paying $20.99 for C-41 Developer that according to the instructions is only good for up to 8 rolls of 135mm at 36 exposures. I found that I could use Kodak Flexicolor bleach and fixer with the developer from the Film Photography Project kit. I began immediately to work on figuring out how to get a separate bleach and fixer so as to eliminate Blix from my process. As I shoot film with the intention of getting the most out of it, this bothered me. Blix was really designed for RA-4 and when you use it in C-41, it causes your images to lose shadow detail and highlights. After getting comfortable with this kit, I started reading about C-41 online and found out that Blix (very common in the kits) isn’t really the best stuff to use in the C-41 process. When I first got started doing C-41 at home, I used the Film Photography Project C-41 kit. This article will talk about how to do C-41 using Kodak’s Flexicolor kit! If you have a safe place to do this and are used to working with photo chemistry, being able to do C-41 (and E-6) are well within your reach. Developing color film at home is not as hard as some people make it out to be. With the band set to return to NYC, we asked Canning to pick out some of his favorite shows here. He added: “ This tour, members are going to bop in and out, because that’s the nature of the band.” It’s not that different, it’s just that the indie rockers weren’t doing that.” Any hip-hop record, different producers on different tracks, and different MCs. … Look at how many artists played on a Joni Mitchell record in the ’70s, there were always 20 people. We had this deep history before anyone uttered the words Broken Social Scene. Kevin went to high school with Emily Haines. We’ve known Leslie, for instance, since 1993. “I think with any band, or dare I say, collective, I think it helps in some ways and it hinders in some ways,” Canning said. The logistics of rustling up the various members and quasi-members of the band might be a reason Broken Social Scene has released only five albums since the band got started in 1999. We were doing that in a much more organic fashion.” … Now with songwriter cameos, you have a publisher trying to put together this writer and that writer. ‘You Forgot it in People’ has a lot of writers on that album, and people have very different careers in their own right, whether it’s Metric or Feist or whether its Stars or it’s Andrew’s project Apostle of Hustle. And the fact that we could draw upon different individuals and their strengths as writers. “The confines of the restrictions of what it means to be a band that just stays as a band, I just think that didn’t interest us as much. The album also set into motion the fluid nature of Broken Social Scene’s lineup, with Canning and fellow founding member Kevin Drew joined by musicians from a then-burgeoning Toronto indie scene that included bands like Metric and Stars. That’s all you want to do as a band, you want to be included.” Say someone is listening to The Cure ‘Disintegration,’ and you put on ‘You Forgot it in People,’ and yeah, that has a vibe too. You just want to do something that you think is paying homage to all the music that you loved. I loved house music, industrial, metal, punk. “I was born in 1969, I’ve been through every phase of music. “I mean, I think as a band, as far as any band, you’re just trying to add to the conversation of all the bands that you love, whether it’s The Cure or Dinosaur Jr. “You Forgot it in People” won a Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) for Alternative Album of the Year in 2003 and raised the band’s profile on both sides of the border. I don’t know, maybe people looked to Canada - ‘Oh, these guys are just peaceful, they don’t have to deal with the agony of what we’re going through.’ Whether we have the Canadian comedians, whether it’s Jim Carrey or Mike Myers or different characters or John Candy, we’re carrying on some kind of Canadian tradition of kind of competing with our U.S. “The ‘Canadian Invasion’ kind of happened on the heels of 9/11, essentially. They’ll play sold-out shows at Webster Hall on Oct. “It was a sensitive time in history, in our world,” Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning said before the band hit the road to mark the 20th anniversary of the group’s breakthrough sophomore album. Bush established the Department of Homeland Security near year’s end. The wounds of 9/11 were fresh in the United States 10 people had died in the Washington, D.C., sniper attacks and President George W. It was a strange time in North America when Broken Social Scene released “You Forgot it in People” in 2002. One problem with these types of spy cams is that you cannot use them covertly at close range as they need to be physically within your sight in order for you to view what it records on its LCD screen. These come in the form of occasional creatures that block your path in one way or another. Likewise, the horror elements didn’t stand in the way as much as I would have expected, which is fine for me as the few enemy encounters that do come up would have been tedious to me if they were replicated into a longer run time. This may or may not be a problem for you, depending on what you are wanting from an atmospheric horror puzzle title.įor me, I appreciated the lack of puzzle shaped barriers in Darq, it allowed me to enjoy the atmosphere and entirely mute plotline a lot more. However, as a result of being stuck on a limited 2D plane (with minimal shifts in 3D) it can sometimes feel that this is a bit too easy, as puzzles become less a test of skill or logic and instead, being more of a matter of time until the puzzles are solved. Most often, any puzzle that you’re not sure on can simply be resolved by walking further through each stage and exploring a corridor from a different direction. Some objects are also affected by this shift in gravity as a room rotates, allowing large props to fall through walls to open new pathways.įor the most part, this is a very smart and well used mechanic that doesn’t feel at all daunting to use or learn as you progress. This gameplay element opens a few possibilities that helps accentuate the fact that this is all taking place in a warped version of reality, such as a chapter that takes place in a subway station, with train obstacles running vertically, horizontally and upside down depending on which axis Lloyd is running along. After doing this, his dream self leaves his body and enters one of the seven chapters that make up the monochrome, gaunt world of Darq.Īs a self-aware dreamer, Lloyd is capable of a feat that allows him to traverse through each stage, such as being able to walk up walls to reach new areas and approach puzzles from a different elevation or viewpoint. As Lloyd, it is immediately apparent that something is off when starting the game, as he finds himself stuck in a room with no means of exit or escape other than by sleeping on the bed. For these, we have fewer examples to work with, things like Alice: Madness Returns and the nightmarish warped locations of Silent Hill come to mind, but even one of those takes place in a realistic locale before going to pot.ĭarq is one of the few that I can think of that takes place in a nightmare setting throughout, with the key aim of the game being to guide Lloyd along a series of puzzles and enemy encounters to escape the nightmare and finally awaken from it. This all comes from the idea that horror needs to be based in some sort of reality, with known locations being menaced by supernatural or slasher style “other” threats taking precedent over the surreal, unrecognisable places that seem unnatural to begin with. However, when it comes to the nightmare side, there does seem to be a bit of a lack of games that are dedicated to this state. Nights Into Dreams, Kirby’s Dreamworld and Psychonauts come to mind as excellent portrayals of the whimsical, filled with surreal imagery and casts of colourful characters to meet and play with. We all have them, some are whimsically fun, some are downright horrifying and that’s what makes them such ripe territory for exploration in an interactive medium. Of all the worlds that can be conveyed in the medium of video games, the realm of dreams is by far one of the most interesting and varied that comes to mind.
